Mentoring Article:
If you see some well dressed businessmen and women in the area with checker boards and
monopoly games tucked under their arms, or crayons and markers stuffed in their pockets, you may wonder if the business community in Hamilton is losing it’s edge. In truth, Hamilton’s business community is well. And those same business persons may just be one of eight Hamilton Rotarians who currently serve as
mentors to elementary school children here in Hamilton.
The program, based on the Creative Mentoring project in Wilmington, Delaware was first introduced to Hamilton Rotary in December, 1998. The premise of the program is to help a child build self-confidence, self-esteem, and better interpersonal communication skills. Our mentors want the students to understand that they are special, that they have unique skills, and that we care for them.
Initially, Hamilton Rotary sponsored three mentors, however, with dedication and some public relations work among the clubs in the District, the program has grown to include 45 mentors from throughout the five counties in our Rotary District. As the program expands each year we realize the value and impact of mentoring.
Our mentors are provided with training in the mentoring process, and work one-on-one with a child at the elementary school. All activities are done in school during the school day. Parents, teachers, and guidance personnel are aware of our activities, goals and objectives.
Creativity and having some fun is the name of the game for our mentors, who bring certain intangible gifts and energy to the program. By using those fun things we did as a kids — a game of monopoly, shooting a few hoops, playing catch, talking about your favorite sports hero, making a holiday treat, our mentors convey self-esteem, confidence, poise, and a sense of accomplishment. In this day of fast food and microwaves who would believe that a tea party with fancy hats, gloves, fine china, and a lace tablecloth has become the signature event for two young ladies and their mentors!! |
